BMW is recalling more than 29,000 vehicles in the U.S. after regulators flagged a starter system that can corrode, short-circuit, and potentially catch fire. Dealers will replace the engine starter free of charge, and owners are told to park outside until the fix is done.
Bayerische Motoren Werke is recalling more than 29,000 cars in the U.S. because the engine starter system can corrode, causing a short circuit and potentially a fire.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the Transportation Department, said in a notice that it had been notified of the safety recall by BMW of North America. The action covers certain 2018-to-2020 530e xDrive, 2017-to-2019 740Le xDrive, 2018-to-2020 530e iPerformance, and 2016-to-2018 330e iPerformance models.
According to the safety report, the engine starter relay in some vehicles may corrode, causing it to overheat and short-circuit. Owners have been advised to park outside and away from buildings until a repair can be made.
The recall potentially affects as many as 29,119 vehicles. Dealers will replace the engine starter free of charge.
