Nvidia now accounts for 3.0% of all US equity trading volume so far this year, more than Tesla and Micron combined, according to Goldman Sachs. Yet the chipmaker's share price has stayed largely flat for most of 2026, and Goldman warns that liquidity beneath the surface looks thinner than the headline volume suggests.

Nvidia has become the single most-traded stock in the entire US equity market, commanding 3.0% of total notional trading volume year-to-date. With roughly 4,000 stocks listed on US exchanges, one company alone is absorbing 3 cents of every dollar traded.

The numbers behind the dominance

Goldman Sachs data puts Nvidia ahead of Micron at 2.8% and Tesla at 2.1% of total market notional volume, with the top ten most-traded stocks together accounting for about 16.4% of all trading activity. Nvidia has regularly exceeded 100 million shares in daily trading volume. Its share price has oscillated between $217 and $224, pushing its market capitalization to approach $5.4 trillion. Despite the frenetic activity, the stock has remained relatively flat for most of 2026.

Liquidity looks deep, but there are cracks

Goldman Sachs flagged that some of Nvidia's peer stocks in the top-traded group show wider bid-ask spreads and thinner order sizes compared to the S&P 500 average. A wider bid-ask spread means it costs more to execute a trade, while thinner order sizes mean less stock is available at any given price. Together, these signals suggest liquidity conditions are more fragile than the headline volume numbers imply.

The obvious driver behind the activity is artificial intelligence. Nvidia's GPUs remain the backbone of AI training infrastructure, and the company has positioned itself as the indispensable supplier for major tech firms racing to build out AI capacity.

What this means for the broader market

A market where one stock captures 3% of all trading activity carries concentration risk. Nvidia's outsized role means a company-specific event doesn't just affect its own shareholders — it moves indices, and benchmark-tracking funds are forced to hold substantial Nvidia positions regardless of investor intent. Record trading volumes can mask underlying market stress.
