Russian President Vladimir Putin says Kyiv "opened Pandora's box" by striking Russian economic infrastructure and warns Moscow will hit back at Ukraine's most sensitive economic sectors. He also says Russia can replace Ukrainian grain exports disrupted by the fighting, and restates that peace talks depend on "realities on the ground."
Vladimir Putin warned Russia would strike back at Ukraine's most sensitive economic sectors, telling a Russian state television journalist that Kyiv had brought this response on itself. He made the comments in remarks published Saturday.
Ukraine has escalated a campaign of drone strikes this summer against Russian economic infrastructure, including oil refineries and online retailers' warehouses, arguing the targets sustain Russia's war effort. Russia, in turn, has struck Ukrainian economic infrastructure, including grain exports moving through the Black Sea.
The strikes have jeopardized Ukraine's agricultural exports, but Putin said Russia could replace the disrupted volumes. According to Reuters: "Consequently, there will be no shortage on the global market", he said, while acknowledging shipment challenges.
