Rivian's second quarter beat Wall Street on both revenue and earnings, with record gross profit near $180 million, yet shares rose just 1% afterward. Overlooked in the reaction: liquidity climbing toward $14 billion, a surge in demo drives, and a roadmap toward a 2028 driverless robotaxi.

Rivian topped Wall Street estimates on the top and bottom lines in its second quarter, posting a record gross profit of nearly $180 million at an 11% gross margin. Management also raised full-year delivery guidance, narrowed its EBITDA loss forecast, and lowered capital expenditure expectations. Even so, the stock rose only 1% following the earnings report.

Liquidity climbs toward $14 billion

The company exited the quarter with $5.3 billion in cash and cash equivalents, but that figure understates its position. Including its asset-based revolving credit facility, liquidity reaches $5.8 billion. Adding roughly $1.3 billion in net proceeds from its July follow-on equity offering brings the total to nearly $7.2 billion.

Additional commitments add further cushion: another $1 billion in non-recourse loan capital from Volkswagen and a $250 million milestone-based investment from Uber Technologies, both anticipated in 2026, would push liquidity to $8.4 billion. Beyond that, Rivian's $4.5 billion Department of Energy loan earmarked for its second factory in Georgia, along with $700 million more from Uber and $460 million more from Volkswagen over the next few years, lifts its expected liquidity to around $14 billion.

Demo drives surge as retail footprint expands

Rivian's ability to generate demand also improved. The company ended the quarter with 43 Rivian Spaces, a 39% increase from the prior year. It also posted a 104% increase in demo drives, which numbered over 57,000 during the quarter. Charging infrastructure grew too, with a 26% increase in Rivian Adventure Network locations and a 37% increase in Rivian Network chargers.

A path toward a 2028 robotaxi

Rivian's driverless technology often sits behind the R2 launch and its Volkswagen joint venture, but the company is making progress there too. Its Autonomy+ system is expected to roll out point-to-point capabilities by the end of this year, a feature comparable to Tesla's Full-Self Driving that lets the driver enter an address for the vehicle to navigate under supervision.

The company has already logged more than 3.5 million miles of universal hands-free travel across the U.S. and Canada. It is also targeting eyes-off features next year and a Level 4 autonomous robotaxi in 2028.
