Salesforce is reportedly prepared to pay as much as $2 billion for Listen Labs, an AI-powered customer research platform, extending a run of acquisitions aimed at building out its agentic AI strategy. The deal would follow Salesforce's approximately $3.6 billion purchase of Fin, formerly Intercom, and could feed new customer intelligence into Agentforce and Data Cloud. Hedge fund positioning in the stock remains strong even as the price tag raises questions about execution risk.

A $2 billion push into customer intelligence

Salesforce is prepared to spend as much as $2 billion to acquire Listen Labs, according to reports that emerged on September 9. Listen Labs uses artificial intelligence to run customer interviews through audio and video, then analyzes the responses for insights.

The potential purchase extends Salesforce's aggressive M&A strategy as the company works to expand its generative and agentic AI capabilities. Salesforce recently completed its approximately $3.6 billion acquisition of Fin, the customer service AI agent provider formerly known as Intercom.

Strengthening Agentforce with customer data

Listen Labs could feed a new layer of customer intelligence into Agentforce, Salesforce's platform for building and deploying AI agents. Customer interviews can surface motivations, preferences, and frustrations that traditional CRM databases don't capture, and integrating those insights into existing customer data could give Agentforce richer context for its recommendations and actions.

The deal could also strengthen Salesforce's broader Data Cloud strategy. Research generated through Listen Labs could be incorporated into customer profiles and made available across sales, marketing, and service applications, potentially creating a new avenue to monetize AI-powered customer research as an additional service.

Valuation and execution risk

The biggest concern is valuation. Paying up to $2 billion for a relatively small AI company would leave little room for execution mistakes, so the deal would need to generate meaningful strategic and financial benefits to justify the price. Integration challenges could delay those benefits, while privacy concerns tied to collecting and analyzing customer conversations could add regulatory and reputational risk.

Salesforce also faces intense competition in AI-powered customer research and enterprise software; if rivals offer similar capabilities at lower cost, the expected payoff from Listen Labs could prove smaller than management anticipates. Some investors could also question whether the company's existing products, including Agentforce, can generate enough organic demand without continuous M&A.

Hedge funds stay committed

Despite the AI-driven M&A strategy, institutional support for the stock remains strong. According to the Insider Monkey database, 99 hedge funds held stakes in Salesforce at the end of the second quarter, compared with 101 funds the previous quarter.

Harris Associates increased its Salesforce position by 9% to approximately $2.5 billion. Arrowstreet Capital, meanwhile, raised its stake by 5% to approximately $2.1 billion. Short interest also points to limited bearish positioning: approximately 3.22% of Salesforce's shares were sold short as of August 14, representing roughly 26.5 million shares.

Salesforce will need to show that Listen Labs can be integrated effectively and contribute to its broader AI monetization plans before the price tag stops looking like the biggest open question in the deal.
