Nevada regulators cleared Tesla to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis in Clark County, a 500-fold jump from its prior 10-vehicle limit, while the company preps an Austin Cybercab launch event. Tesla shares rose 5% on the Nevada approval, adding to a roughly 3% gain earlier in the week tied to Cybercab anticipation. Uber and Waymo received parallel approvals in the same market.

Tesla's stock rose 5% in midday trading Friday as the Nevada Transportation Authority approved the company to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis in Clark County, home to Las Vegas and about 2.4 million people. Shares may also be benefiting from Tesla's disclosure that it will detail its European Semi truck launch next month. Uber and Waymo also won approval, each cleared for up to 1,000 vehicles, and together the three companies can deploy as many as 7,000 self-driving vehicles in the county over the next 12 months.

Nevada's ceiling jumps 500-fold

The new permit replaces an interim authorization from late July 2026 that had capped Tesla at 10 vehicles with restrictions on geography, speed and airport access. Tesla's Full Autonomous Vehicle Network permit now covers all of Clark County, including the airport corridor. But the 5,000 figure is a ceiling, not a deployment target: a Tesla representative told the NTA the number was meant to give the company flexibility. The NTA granted comparable approvals to Uber and Waymo on the same day.

Cybercab launch event builds momentum

The stock move follows an earlier lift tied to Tesla's upcoming Cybercab reveal. Tesla shares climbed roughly 3% on August 19 as anticipation built around an invitation-only Cybercab launch event in Austin, tied to a sweepstakes running from August 17 to August 23 with winners announced August 25. Tesla has signaled public access to the Cybercab service could open as soon as late August or early September. The two-seat Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, a step change from the Model Y vehicles Tesla has used for robotaxi rides in Austin since November 2025.

Scaling cautiously, fleet still small

Tesla currently operates 232 vehicles across Texas, California and Florida, according to a crowd-sourced robotaxi tracker, far behind Waymo's 3,871 robotaxis deployed across six states. Musk told investors last month: "We're going as fast as humanly possible in scaling robotaxi" while pointing to safety as the constraint on pace. J.P. Morgan analyst Rajat Gupta, who rates Tesla neutral, wrote in an Aug. 18 client note that Tesla's limited Cybercab test fleet continues to validate the technology, adding that further Model Y additions to the robotaxi fleet are being held back to reflect confidence in Cybercab's near-term scalability.

The company plans to fill out its fleet with the Cybercab, which went into production in late April, and retire the Model Y vehicles it has relied on for rides so far.
