Introducing Cent Accounts on MT5: Trade live markets with smaller position sizes

Topics in article

Moving from a demo account to live trading can feel like a big step. A demo account uses virtual funds, so nothing is really on the line, and nothing is really learned about handling your own money. A standard live account puts real dollars at risk from the very first trade, which can be enough to put a new trader off entirely, or push them into risking more than they’re ready to lose.

Cent Accounts on MT5 are the middle ground. You trade live markets with real money, but your balance and position sizes are scaled right down. It’s the missing step between demo and standard: real enough to teach you how live trading actually feels, small enough that early mistakes cost cents rather than dollars.

What is a Cent Account?

A Cent Account works like a normal MT5 account, with one difference: the account currency is US cents (USC) rather than US dollars (USD).

That single change makes everything smaller. Inside the MT5 terminal your balance is shown in cents, so if you deposit $10, the terminal displays a balance of 1,000 USC. Your deposit, your position sizes, and your profits and losses are all measured in cents, which keeps the real money at stake low while you learn.

The main difference between a Cent account and other MT5 account types offered by PrimeXBT, is the way your balance is displayed, lot sizes, available instruments and leverage, as we’ll see below.

One thing to be clear about is that a Cent Account is not a demo account, and it’s not a watered-down version of the platform. Every trade uses real money, and both profits and losses are real. What you learn here transfers directly to a Standard account when you’re ready to scale up.

Who is it for

Cent Accounts let you experience live market conditions with real money, making them ideal for beginners, strategy testing, and building confidence before trading with larger capital.

But it isn’t only for newcomers. More experienced traders use cent accounts too.

The new Cent account is suitable for:

  • beginners placing their first live trades;
  • traders moving from demo to live;
  • cautious traders who don’t want to commit a large balance;
  • experienced traders testing a new strategy;
  • traders trialling an Expert Advisor or automated system;
  • anyone trying an unfamiliar market or approach.

A Cent Account reduces the monetary size of each position. It does not remove trading risk. It’s important to know that leveraged products can still produce losses, especially during fast market movements.

How it works

A Cent Account behaves like any MT5 account, but a few mechanics are worth understanding before you start.

Your deposit is shown in cents

When you fund a Cent Account, MT5 displays the balance in cents. Deposit $10, and the terminal reads 1,000 USC (because $10 equals 1,000 cents).

Here’s the reassuring part: your Personal Area still shows the real figure of $10. Nothing is lost or changed.

  • Deposit amount: $10
  • Balance in your Personal Area: $10
  • Balance shown in MT5: 1,000 USC

Both figures represent the same money, shown in dollars in your Personal Area and in cents inside MT5. Once you know to expect it, the larger cent number makes complete sense.

Position sizes are scaled down

Trades on a Cent Account are much smaller than equivalent trades on a Standard account.

For example, 1.00 lot on a Cent Account provides approximately the same market exposure as 0.01 lot on a Standard account.

This allows you to practise placing normal-looking trade sizes while committing less real money. Always check the contract size, margin required and potential profit or loss before opening a position, as these can vary by instrument.

Worth noting: Although a standard lot still equals 100,000 units of the underlying instrument, a Cent Account is funded in cents rather than dollars. This allows you to trade using much smaller amounts of real money.

Important note about leverage

Cent Accounts offer leverage of up to 1:1000 while account equity remains below the equivalent of $1,000.

Once account equity reaches $1,000, the margin requirement for new positions increases tenfold. This may reduce the maximum leverage on those positions from 1:1000 to 1:100, depending on the instrument.

For instrument-specific leverage and margin requirements, please visit the Fees & Conditions section.

Swap-free conditions and bonuses

Swap-free conditions and eligible bonuses are subject to their usual terms and eligibility requirements. Bonus availability can depend on the promotion, account eligibility, and your region.

Available instruments

Cent Accounts provide access to a selected range of instruments rather than PrimeXBT’s full product catalogue. These include FX Majors, FX Minors, Gold, Silver, Bitcoin and Ethereum. The complete instrument list, trading symbols, and leverage per symbol are published under Fees & Conditions.

How to open a Cent Account

Opening a Cent Account takes a few steps from your Personal Area.

  1. Log in to your Personal Area.
  2. Open the trading accounts section.
  3. Select New Account.
  4. Choose MT5 as the platform.
  5. Scroll right and select Cent as the account type.
  6. Create the account.
  7. Fund the account.
  8. Log in to MT5 with the new account details.

After funding, your deposit appears in dollars in your Personal Area and in USC inside MT5.

Before you start

A quick checklist before you place your first trade:

  • Confirm that your MT5 balance is displayed in USC.
  • Check that the instrument you want to trade is available.
  • Review the leverage and margin requirement for that instrument.
  • Review the applicable swap-free, bonus, and trading conditions.

The bottom line

A Cent Account is a sensible way to make the jump from practising to trading for real on MT5. You get genuine market conditions and real, if small, stakes, on a platform that behaves exactly like a Standard account, so everything you learn carries straight over when you’re ready to scale up. Real money is still at risk, but each position is scaled down. Whether you’re placing your first live trade or testing a new strategy, it’s a sensible place to start.
