How to Trade Intel Stock (INTC): A Trader’s Guide

Intel still has the reputation of a sleepy blue chip. The tape says otherwise: INTC moved more than 5% in a day on 66 of the last 250 sessions. To trade Intel stock (INTC), you buy the shares on Nasdaq through a broker, or go long or short with a CFD or an option, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. New York time.

The S&P 500 ETF (SPY) did not move 5% on a single one of those days. This guide covers the numbers behind INTC, the two-year round trip from a dividend cut to a record high, what moves the price, how the stock behaves around reports and how to size a position before the next one on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

How to trade Intel stock in five steps

  1. Decide what you are trading. Intel is now a bet on two businesses: chips it designs (PC and server processors) and a foundry that makes chips for other companies. News about either can move the stock 10% in a day.
  2. Pick the instrument. Shares suit a holding period of months or years. A CFD or an option suits a view of days or weeks and lets you go short.
  3. Open and fund an account with a broker or platform that offers Nasdaq stocks or CFDs on them.
  4. Enter with a limit order. Average daily turnover over the past three months was about 107 million shares, so liquidity is deep, but the average daily move of 3.6% means a market order at a busy open can still fill away from the last quote you saw.
  5. Check the semiconductor sector before every trade. In 2026 Intel has moved with chip stocks as a group more than with the wider market (see the correlation figures below).

Two rows explain most of the risk. The stock has more than doubled this year, yet it sits 36% below its June high and has lost almost a quarter of its value in three weeks of October. And the share count is up 13% in a year, which means every dollar of future profit is split among more owners.

From a dividend cut to a record high in 22 months

You can’t read today’s chart without the bottom it came from. On August 1, 2024 Intel reported weak second-quarter results, announced cuts to more than 15% of its workforce and suspended its dividend. The next day the shares fell 26% to $21.48, the biggest one-day drop since at least 1982 according to Bloomberg data cited by Kontan.

The rescue came from outside investors rather than earnings. In August 2025 the US government agreed to buy 433.3 million new Intel shares at $20.47 each, a 9.9% stake paid for with CHIPS Act grants and a Secure Enclave award Intel had already been granted, NPR reported. Weeks later Nvidia agreed to buy $5 billion of Intel stock at $23.28 a share, according to AP coverage. Both prices are useful anchors: they show where large, informed buyers were willing to commit a little over a year ago.

Then 2026 happened. The month-end closes tell it faster than any narrative:

Month-end INTC close What was going on
Dec 31, 2025 $36.90 Year starts
Mar 31, 2026 $44.13 17% drop after the Q4 report in January, then recovery
Apr 30, 2026 $94.48 Q1 beat and higher guidance: +23.6% on April 24
Jun 30, 2026 $139.63 Apple chipmaking reports; intraday high $142.35 that day
Jul 31, 2026 $90.20 Q2 beat sold off on spending worries
Aug 31, 2026 $89.51 $20 billion share sale at $95
Sep 30, 2026 $120.23 Analyst upgrades, CPU price-rise reports
Oct 20, 2026 $91.69 Chip-sector selloff, fatal accident at the Kiryat Gat fab

Closing prices are from Yahoo Finance. On May 5 the stock rose 12.9% to a record close of $108.15 after Bloomberg reported that Apple had held early talks about having Intel make its device processors in the US, as summarised by Nasdaq.com. No confirmed Apple contract had been published at the time of writing. A stock that can add more than $50 billion of market value on a report of talks can lose it on a report that the talks stalled.

What moves Intel’s share price

The chip sector, most days

Across 201 sessions in 2026, Intel’s daily returns had a correlation of 0.76 with SOXX and a beta of about 1.3 to it, calculated from Yahoo Finance closes. Against SPY the correlation was 0.49. In plain terms: on a day chip stocks fall 3%, Intel has tended to fall about 4%, and the broad market tells you far less. The October 8 selloff is a typical case. Intel fell 5.3% as chip stocks dropped on a Financial Times report questioning OpenAI’s revenue, according to TIKR. Nothing at Intel had changed that day.

Nvidia and AMD set much of the sector’s mood, so their reports move Intel too. AMD reports on November 3 and Nvidia on November 17, both after Intel. The guide to trading AMD stocks covers its closest rival in x86 processors.

Foundry customers

The bull case on Intel rests on outside companies paying it to make their chips. That is why customer news moves the stock as hard as earnings do: the Apple report in May, and Tesla’s commitment to Intel’s 14A process, which, together with a JPMorgan upgrade, lifted the shares almost 4% during the session on October 19, Yahoo Finance reported. They closed 2.4% higher. Intel’s annual report expects customers to make 14A decisions between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027, so more of these headlines are due.

Prices and analyst calls

On September 8 Intel rose 9.1% to $104.47 after Northland Securities upgraded it to Outperform with a $120 target and a Digitimes report said Intel planned CPU price increases of up to 10%, BeInCrypto reported. On October 19 JPMorgan moved to Neutral from Underweight with an $85 target. The 49 analysts tracked by StockAnalysis average $118.05, 29% above the October 20 close. The range between JPMorgan and the average tells you how unsettled the view on Intel still is.

New shares

Intel has paid for its factories partly by selling stock. Beyond the government and Nvidia deals, it sold about 210.5 million new shares at $95 in August to raise $20 billion. Coverage of the July call put 2026 capital spending above $20 billion, so the funding question returns every quarter. Each new issue adds supply, and the issue price becomes a level traders watch: the stock closed below $95 on October 16 and has stayed under it since.

The biggest days usually aren’t earnings days

Most traders plan for volatility around the quarterly report. With Intel, that covers only part of the risk. Of the 10 largest one-day moves in the past year, eight came on days with no Intel report.

Date Close-to-close move Intel report?
Apr 24, 2026 +23.6% Yes, Q1 2026
Jan 23, 2026 −17.0% Yes, Q4 2025
May 8, 2026 +14.0% No
May 5, 2026 +12.9% No (Apple talks report)
Sep 21, 2026 +12.1% No
Apr 29, 2026 +12.1% No
Jan 21, 2026 +11.7% No (the day before the Q4 report)
Apr 8, 2026 +11.4% No
Jul 30, 2026 +11.3% No
Jun 5, 2026 −11.3% No

Calculated from Yahoo Finance daily closes, October 21, 2025 to October 20, 2026. Eight of the 10 were up days, which says as much about this year’s rally as about Intel. Across all 16 sessions with a close-to-close move above 10%, 14 went up and two went down, so a short position in INTC has faced far more sudden 10% days against it than a long one.

How INTC reacts to earnings

Intel reports after the Nasdaq close, so the first regular session to price the numbers is the next morning. The table measures each reaction from the report-day close.

Report Next-day open Next-day close Five sessions later Volume vs 20-day average
Q3 2025 (Oct 23, 2025) +4.9% +0.3% +5.2% 1.9x
Q4 2025 (Jan 22, 2026) −13.7% −17.0% −10.4% 2.9x
Q1 2026 (Apr 23, 2026) +23.1% +23.6% +41.5% 2.6x
Q2 2026 (Jul 23, 2026) +0.1% −7.9% −9.1% 1.7x

Calculated from Yahoo Finance daily data. Three patterns stand out:

  • The open is not the verdict, in either direction. In October 2025 the stock opened almost 5% higher and closed flat. In July 2026 it opened flat and closed almost 8% lower, as attention moved from the beat to the cost of the foundry build-out.
  • Guidance beats the quarter. January’s 17% drop followed a quarter that beat estimates but came with a weak outlook; April’s 24% jump came with a guide well above forecasts.
  • The move can keep going. Five sessions after April’s report the stock was 41.5% above the report-day close, against 23.6% after the first day. After January’s it recovered about two-fifths of the first-day loss within a week.

Intel’s last three reports each showed a GAAP loss next to a non-GAAP profit. In Q2 2026 most of the $11 billion GAAP loss was a $12.5 billion mark-to-market charge on shares escrowed under its government agreement, according to the Q2 release filed with the SEC, and that charge swings with the stock price. The GAAP vs non-GAAP entry explains the split. For the Q3 date, call time in five time zones, guidance versus consensus and what analysts will ask on October 29, see the Intel earnings date page. The guide to reading an earnings report covers which lines to read first.

Ways to trade or invest in Intel

Route What you hold Can you go short? Costs to watch Suits
Shares INTC stock, with voting rights Only by borrowing shares through a margin account Commission and spread; no dividend income Holding for months or years
CFDs A contract on the price difference, no ownership Yes Spread, overnight financing, leverage that magnifies losses as well as gains Short-term views, long or short
Options The right to buy (call) or sell (put) at a set price Yes, with puts Premium, which rises before reports as implied volatility climbs Defined-risk bets on direction or size of a move
Semiconductor ETFs A basket of chip stocks that may include Intel Not directly Management fee A sector view without single-stock risk

The missing dividend matters more than it looks. Before August 2024, holding Intel paid you to wait. Now the return is the share price and nothing else, which makes INTC behave more like a growth stock than the income holding many portfolios once used it as.

Sizing an Intel position

Start with the size of an ordinary day, then the size of a bad one. Over the past year Intel’s average daily move was 3.6%. On a $10,000 position that is about $360 of swing on a normal session. The January report opened the stock 13.7% lower, a gap of about $1,370 on the same position before any order could fill.

A stop-loss does not protect against that kind of move. If the stock opens below your stop, the order fills at the first available price, which can be far below the level you set (the price gap entry shows how). Three habits help:

  1. Set the stop from the stock’s own range. The average true range tells you how far Intel usually travels in a session, so a stop tighter than one day’s range is likely to be hit by noise.
  2. Size for the gap, not the stop. Ask what a 15% overnight move would cost you. Intel opened more than 10% away from the prior close three times in the past year, once by 23%, and closed more than 10% away on 16 days.
  3. Cut size, or stand aside, into October 29. Holding through the report is a bet on the guidance, not on the chart.

Intel stock trading hours

Nasdaq’s regular session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday. Pre-market trading starts at 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading runs to 8:00 p.m., with thinner volume and wider spreads. Intel’s results land in the after-hours window, so the first reaction happens when liquidity is lowest.

Watch the clocks this month. Europe leaves summer time on October 25 and the US on November 1. In the week in between, the Nasdaq open comes one hour earlier than usual for traders in Europe: 13:30 UTC, or 14:30 in Central Europe instead of 15:30. Friday, October 30, the first session after Intel’s report, falls in that week.

Trading Intel with PrimeXBT

PrimeXBT offers Intel as a share CFD, so you can take a long or short position on INTC from the same account used for crypto, forex, commodities and indices, without owning the shares. The CFD price follows the Nasdaq quote, so the overnight gaps in the tables above apply to a CFD position as well. Follow the Intel share price chart, check current trading conditions on the platform before you size a trade, and read how CFD trading works if the product is new to you. Intel is a Nasdaq 100 member; the Nasdaq 100 guide covers trading the index, and the earnings season hub lists the other reports landing the same week, with tactics in how to trade earnings.

JPMorgan’s target is $85. The analyst average is $118. Intel closed on October 20 at $91.69, much nearer the bear than the consensus.
