Bitcoin Flushes Longs Near $80K as Government Coins Move and ETFs Bleed

Bitcoin breaks its trendline and squeezes longs

Bitcoin did what last week’s report flagged as the main risk: it broke below the rising support line and slid toward $80,000. On Bitstamp the low printed near $80,300 on October 8, about 8% below the September high at 87,374, as more than $1.1 billion in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, roughly $1.05 billion of them longs. This report covers that long squeeze, the on-chain picture behind it and the levels that frame the next move.

On the 4h chart, the break of the trendline near 85,000 on October 7 triggered the flush into the long squeeze zone between roughly 80,000 and 81,800. Buyers stepped in there, and BTC closed the week at 83,893, about 4.5% above the low. The 87,374 high remains the ceiling. If 80,000 gives way, the next support band sits at 76,229 and 75,568, close to the cost-basis level discussed below.

Crypto heatmap

The weekly view of the crypto heatmap is almost entirely red. BTC lost 1.82% to $83,908.72, the smallest drop among the top five coins, while altcoins took the brunt of the squeeze: ETH fell 6.01% to $2,543.47, SOL 7.68% to $112.37, XRP 5.45% and DOGE 8.7%. Older large caps fared worst, with BCH down 10.42% and LTC down 9.14%.

Only two names finished green. NEAR jumped 16.67% to $5.79 after Robinhood Chain plugged into NEAR Intents for cross-chain swaps and the network moved quantum-resistant signatures closer to mainnet. ADA added 2.76%. HYPE, the subject of a section below, lost 4.01%, a milder drop than ETH or SOL.

Altcoin Season Index eases to 66

The Altcoin Season Index slipped from 68 to 66. The index measures how many leading coins outperformed BTC over the past 90 days, so it lags weekly moves: the altcoin weakness in the heatmap above has not yet shown up in the reading. At 66 it still sits below the 75 threshold that marks a true altcoin season.

Fear and Greed cools to Neutral

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index reads 60, down from 64 a week ago, and the gauge now sits in Neutral.

The history chart shows how mild that cooling is next to the price action. BTC swung about 8% from high to low this week, yet the index lost only four points. The market is not treating the dip as a trend change, and that cuts both ways: complacency leaves room for a deeper flush, while the structure still favors buyers as long as price holds above the cost-basis levels covered below. A break under 75,000 would run through the long-liquidation clusters on the map at the end of this report and would likely push the index into Fear.

HYPE fades after its Binance listing

Last week’s report noted that coins have tended to weaken after a Binance listing, and HYPE is following that pattern so far. It peaked at 98.02 around its September 24 spot debut on Binance and fell as low as about 82.60 on October 8, a drawdown of roughly 15%. It now trades at 86.79, about 11% below the peak.

On the daily chart, price is holding the 83.80 support but sits under an imbalance between roughly 86.50 and 91, with lower highs at 98.02 and 93.89. If 83.80 fails, the path opens toward 78.04, and toward the 70 area in a broader risk-off. Over a longer horizon HYPE has held up better than most of the market, still up about 68% from its August low near 51.50, which keeps it on many crypto investors’ watchlists.

Short-term holder cost basis near $74,000

The key on-chain support sits near $74,000, the realized price of short-term holders as tracked by CryptoQuant. It is the average cost basis of coins that last moved within 155 days, and BTC currently trades about 13% above it.

The line bottomed in August and has been rising since, which reflects fresh buying at higher prices. A move below it would put recent buyers underwater, and in past cycles that has accelerated selling and forced liquidations. As long as price holds above it, the level reads as a sign of strength rather than distribution.

Elevated trader profits left Bitcoin exposed

BTC is still about 4% below its September high after this week’s 8% swing. The selloff coincided with US government wallet activity. On October 8, addresses Arkham labels as US Government seized Bitfinex funds moved 12,267 BTC, about $1.01 billion, to new addresses, after several thousand BTC from government wallets reached Coinbase Prime over the prior two days. No sale has been confirmed. US spot bitcoin ETFs added to the pressure with about $680 million in net outflows over the week.

The vulnerability was already in place. The chart tracks traders who bought BTC one to three months ago. Their unrealized profit margin peaked near 33% in late September, the highest since December 2024, and holders realized up to 25,700 BTC in daily profit, the most in 2026. With that much paper profit, any shock invites selling, and each round of profit-taking can push price lower. The margin has since cooled to about 20%, while these traders’ realized price has climbed toward $69,000, so the cushion is thinner but far from exhausted.

Bitcoin liquidation map

The 30-day liquidation map from CoinGlass shows where leverage is stacked around the current price of 83,969. Above, the largest short clusters sit between 87,000 and 88,000, with the biggest single bar near 87,300, plus a smaller pocket around 84,800.

Below, long liquidations concentrate near 82,000, between 79,900 and 80,600, and around 77,200. Cumulative long leverage down to 73,919 totals close to $10 billion, against roughly $6.7 billion of shorts up to about 93,000, so the map now tilts toward longs. A push through 87,374 would run into the short cluster and could force covering, while a break under 80,000 would expose the larger long-liquidation pool.

Conclusion

The long squeeze flushed about $1.05 billion in leveraged longs, tested the zone near 80,000 and left BTC at 83,893. The pressure came from several directions at once: government wallets moving coins, ETFs losing about $680 million and traders sitting on their fattest margins since December 2024. Sentiment barely flinched, with Fear and Greed still at a Neutral 60, while altcoins took the heavier hit. The structure stays constructive while BTC holds above the short-term holder cost basis near $74,000. Wednesday’s US CPI is the next macro test, and the levels to watch are 87,374 above, where the short cluster sits, and 80,000 below, where the long-liquidation pool begins.
