Amazon finalized its $50 billion investment in OpenAI on July 31, releasing a conditional $35 billion tranche after the AI lab hit performance milestones. The move locks OpenAI into $100 billion of AWS spending over eight years, a day after Amazon's own Q2 earnings showed AWS growth of 37% and shares that surged more than 8% after hours.
Amazon finalized its $50 billion investment in OpenAI on July 31, after the AI lab hit undisclosed performance milestones that unlocked the remaining $35 billion tranche of a deal first announced in February.
How the deal came together
The company committed $15 billion upfront when the investment was announced on February 27, with the remaining $35 billion conditional on OpenAI meeting specific milestones. An SEC filing confirmed the full funding was released after those milestones were met.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, speaking to CNBC around the time of the initial announcement, emphasized the long-term returns and "synergy" between Amazon's cloud infrastructure and OpenAI's AI capabilities. Amazon wasn't alone at the table: the investment was part of a broader $110 billion funding round that included SoftBank and NVIDIA, each contributing $30 billion.
OpenAI has committed to spending approximately $100 billion over the next eight years on AWS, making AWS the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier. Amazon invested $50 billion and secured a $100 billion customer contract in the same handshake.
Earnings reinforce the AI infrastructure bet
The investment lands a day after Amazon posted Q2 2026 revenue of $200.6 billion, crushing analyst estimates of roughly $196.47 billion. AWS, Amazon's cloud computing division, grew 37% year-over-year. Amazon shares also surged more than 8% in after-hours trading on the results.
Apple, by contrast, reported $109.4 billion in revenue, also beating consensus, yet saw its shares fall in after-hours trading despite the beat. FolioBeyond, an asset management firm that tracks AI-related capital expenditure, flagged the divergence as emblematic of the broader AI trade reshaping how investors value technology companies.
The AWS moat deepens
By making AWS the exclusive provider for OpenAI Frontier, Amazon gets to showcase infrastructure including Amazon Bedrock and its custom Trainium chips as the foundation powering one of the most widely used AI models. The milestone-based structure of the investment required OpenAI to hit specific performance targets before Amazon released the conditional $35 billion.
