CoreWeave's cost of default insurance reached a record on October 14-15, 2026, after a slide in its high-yield bonds and plans to borrow more for GPU infrastructure. Management has pushed back and outlined a plan to seek investment-grade ratings on specific facilities.
The cost of insuring CoreWeave's debt against default jumped to a record on October 14-15, 2026. The trigger was a slide in the AI cloud provider's high-yield bonds and fresh plans to borrow more money for GPU infrastructure.
Default swap pricing hits 1,194.5 basis points
The cost of CoreWeave's five-year CDS climbed to 1,194.5 basis points. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point.
At that level, the pricing implies a more than 60% probability of default. The source describes that figure as a market-implied reading, not a forecast from the company or a rating agency.
CoreWeave's unsecured notes maturing in 2031-2032 traded as low as 76.5-81 cents on the dollar. Those prices translate into yields surpassing 15-16%, and the selloff knocked approximately 15-16% off the share price.
Debt load and maturities
CoreWeave's total debt load is reported at about $50 billion, while debt principal stood at $35.6 billion as of mid-2026. The company faces approximately $4.4 billion coming due by the end of 2026 and $6.2 billion due in 2027.
Meanwhile, S&P and Fitch assign CoreWeave a B/B+ rating, below investment grade. Against that, the company has a contracted backlog worth more than $100 billion, and Nvidia provides a backstop for unsold capacity through April 2032.
Management pushes back
CEO Mike Intrator called the market reaction "irrational."
Co-founder Brannin McBee laid out a plan to pursue investment-grade ratings on specific facilities. The idea is to carve out individual data center projects with their own financing, separate from the junk-rated parent.
The Nvidia backstop does not pay down the debt that comes due before April 2032, and the terms CoreWeave secures on its near-term maturities will reveal how much confidence lenders have.
