Democrats have won control of both the US Senate and the House in the 2026 midterm elections, according to the Associated Press. The result reshapes the outlook for the stalled CLARITY Act and could bring more scrutiny of Trump-linked crypto businesses.
Democrats won control of the US Senate, according to the Associated Press, after Democrat Josh Turek won in Iowa and brought Democrats and independents who caucus with them to 51 seats.
The party also won the US House, flipping a chamber Republicans have held since 2023. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is in line to become Speaker, and President Donald Trump congratulated the Democrats on the Senate win.
Republican-held Senate seats flip
Democrat James Talarico won Texas' Senate race against Republican Ken Paxton. He became the first Democrat to win a statewide election in Texas since 1994.
In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown, a longtime crypto critic, beat Republican Sen. Jon Husted in a race that attracted approximately $63 million in crypto industry spending. Meanwhile, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine. Collins was one of four Republicans to oppose advancing the CLARITY Act in September.
What the result means for crypto
The outcome reshapes the outlook for the stalled CLARITY Act and determines which lawmakers lead committees overseeing the industry. Democratic control could also bring more congressional scrutiny of Trump-linked crypto businesses and regulators' decisions.
