The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell even though most of its components rose, as Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs dragged on the index. Chip stocks extended a volatile run, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also slipped despite gains across the broader market.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 50 points, or 0.1%, even though 22 of its 30 members were rising on the day. Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs, two of the index's biggest components, accounted for much of the drag.
A similar pattern repeated across the broader market. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% despite 330 of its members trading higher, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.2%.
Chip stocks were getting hammered after a big run, continuing a pattern of two-way volatility that has characterized the group's moves all year. The Dow itself has limited exposure to those chipmakers, but stealth-AI names like Caterpillar and Goldman are still moving the index.
