X is in talks to pay influential users in stablecoins such as USDC for their content, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The move would extend Elon Musk's push into crypto payments, which already spans SpaceX's Starlink service, and comes as X overhauls its creator payment programs.
Social media platform X is exploring stablecoins such as Circle's USDC to pay royalties to influential users for uploading content, according to a person familiar with the plans. The conversations with X are ongoing, the person said, adding that they also work with other social media platforms testing stablecoins as a way to pay commissions to influencers. Media representatives of X did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Stablecoins already move money for Musk's other ventures
The talks would extend Musk's embrace of stablecoins, which have a collective market cap of over $300 billion and have become a staple for blockchain payments. Musk's SpaceX already uses stablecoins to collect cross-border payments from customers of its Starlink satellite internet service in various emerging markets.
In March, Musk hired crypto veteran Benji Taylor as head of design at X, tying the role to both xAI and SpaceX. Taylor previously led design at Coinbase's Base blockchain network and has a background in wallets and decentralized finance.
X overhauls how it pays creators
The discussions come as X phases out its long-running Revenue Sharing program in favor of a new system called the Original Content Rewards Program, outlined in a recent post by the social media firm. According to CoinDesk, the program is designed to "reward creators who bring original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity, and commentary to X," the company said. X has not detailed how or whether stablecoin payouts would fit into this new structure.
