German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will press his cabinet next week to speed up pro-growth reforms agreed before the summer recess, according to a Bild am Sonntag report. The measures cover taxes, pensions, deregulation and digitalisation, with Merz seeking faster relief for businesses, tradespeople and small and medium-sized companies.
Merz will urge his cabinet next week to accelerate reforms aimed at easing the burden on businesses and reviving economic growth, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday. The push comes ahead of a cabinet retreat in Neuhardenberg, Brandenburg.
According to Reuters: "At stake in Germany are growth and employment. That is the most important issue," Merz told the newspaper ahead of the retreat.
The chancellor, leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union, plans to focus ministers on swiftly implementing reforms agreed before the summer break. Those reforms cover taxes, pensions, deregulation and digitalisation, according to the report. He said the decisions made before the recess were historic and must now be implemented as quickly as possible.
Merz added that the government's priority is rapid, comprehensive relief for the economy, particularly for tradespeople and small and medium-sized companies.
