Iran's hard-line leadership is preparing forces for a wider conflict with the United States just as President Donald Trump has ordered US envoys to halt all negotiations with Tehran. A 60-day ceasefire brokered through the Islamabad Memorandum lapsed in mid-August without renewal, and crude oil markets are already reacting to the risk of a shutdown at the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran readies forces as ceasefire lapses

Intercepted communications and intelligence reports indicate a strategic shift by Iran's hard-line leaders to prepare their forces for a potential expansion of the conflict with the United States. The conflict has been active since February 2026, with strikes on shipping and regional targets already recorded. Iran's preparation of missiles, drones, and militia coordination points toward escalation beyond simple deterrence.

Trump orders talks halted

The military buildup follows Trump's decision to close the diplomatic channel entirely. According to Crypto Briefing, Trump declared on August 13: "no talks ongoing or planned" with Tehran, ruling out any extension of the ceasefire and calling the moment Iran's last chance to negotiate. Tehran, for its part, has denied that formal negotiations were ever really taking place.

That ceasefire, brokered through the Islamabad Memorandum signed in June 2026, had held for 60 days while Oman and Qatar facilitated back-channel talks between Washington and Tehran. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner mediated those conversations, focusing on de-escalation and keeping shipping lanes open, while Iran routed its side through Omani intermediaries and kept the discussion narrowly focused on Hormuz shipping rather than the broader nuclear and geopolitical questions Washington wanted addressed.

Oil markets brace for Hormuz risk

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply on any given day, making it the single most critical chokepoint in the global crude oil supply chain. Crude prices have already faced upward pressure as traders price in a growing probability that a confrontation could interrupt shipping through the strait.

With the ceasefire expired and negotiations formally halted, traders are left pricing geopolitical risk against a military buildup on Iran's side of the standoff.
