The United Arab Emirates has halted all trade, commercial and financial transactions with Iran until further notice, a senior Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said. The move follows regional escalations that Abu Dhabi says threaten peace and security, and it follows recent tensions over shipping incidents near the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Arab Emirates has cut all commercial and financial ties with Iran, according to Afra Al Hameli, Director of the Strategic Communications Department at the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She confirmed the suspension covers trade, commerce and financial transactions and will remain in place until further notice.

Al Hameli also rejected speculation circulating about the true state of Emirati-Iranian economic relations. She said the halt responds to regional escalations that risk undermining both regional and international peace and security, though the statement did not specify which escalation triggered the decision.

A targeted move, not a diplomatic break

Despite the suspension, Al Hameli framed it as a security-driven step rather than a wholesale rupture. She reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to dialogue, cooperation and regional integration as its preferred path toward stability and prosperity in the region.

She further stressed the UAE's intent to protect the integrity of the international financial system, saying any measures taken align with international law and global standards. That language signals concern in Abu Dhabi over compliance and reputational exposure across global financial and banking networks, given the UAE's role as a major regional trade and finance hub.

Shipping tensions near Hormuz set the backdrop

Crypto Briefing reported the halt follows recent tensions over commercial shipping incidents near the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway central to Gulf oil flows. No timeline was given for a review or reinstatement of ties.

Traders are watching for signs the halt signals a wider regional realignment against Tehran, a shift that could tighten sentiment around Gulf shipping lanes and Strait of Hormuz risk premia. Any perception that Abu Dhabi is aligning with sanctions-style measures could feed into oil risk premiums, even without a direct supply disruption. Markets will also look for reciprocal signals from Tehran or other Gulf states before pricing in a lasting shift in regional trade flows.
