A senior Iranian source told Reuters there are no discussions with the US over extending a ceasefire, arguing the pact never had a start date and therefore has nothing to extend. The remarks follow constant exchanges of strikes and attacks along the Strait of Hormuz, and speculation earlier the same day that both sides sought an extension.

Iran says there is no ceasefire left to extend with the United States, according to a senior Iranian source cited by Reuters. From Tehran's perspective, no start date was ever set for the truce, so there is nothing to prolong.

The source said the US violated the agreement 48 hours after it was reached and withdrew from it a few days later. One issue still on the table is whether Washington returns to the conditions set out in the memorandum of understanding, including a timeframe for implementing its commitments, but the source said there has been no progress on that front.

Earlier in the day, speculative reports suggested both sides were looking to extend the ceasefire before it was due to lapse on 17 August. Yet both sides had already walked away from the arrangement well before today, after repeatedly exchanging military strikes and attacks along the Strait of Hormuz.

The arrangement traces back to a 60-day memorandum of understanding reached at the end of June. Iran now says that pact simply doesn't exist anymore, so there is nothing left to extend when neither side is honouring it. The standoff adds to broader geopolitical risk weighing on energy markets.

The renewed tension gave oil prices a lift. WTI crude rose 0.2% to $83.35 after touching lows near $82.50 earlier in the session.
