Iran's Revolutionary Guards called US President Donald Trump a liar over his claims about Tehran's nuclear programme and the state of Iran's energy blockade in the Gulf. The group also disputed US claims that the Strait of Hormuz is effectively open, even as fresh data show oil exports through the strait partly recovering this month.
An Iranian Revolutionary Guards spokesperson called US President Donald Trump a big liar on Tuesday, accusing him of hiding the truth from Americans about Iran's nuclear programme and the effectiveness of Iran's blockade on Gulf energy supplies.
Trump has cited the need to stop Iran from ever building a nuclear weapon as one of his reasons for waging war on the country. Spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi rejected that reasoning. According to Reuters: "The enemy (US) knows that Iran is not after nuclear weapons," Mohebbi said, arguing Washington's real issue is Iran's vastness rather than its nuclear programme.
Mohebbi also challenged US assertions that Iran has lost most of its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, even though the US military has been able to protect some tankers moving oil out of the Gulf. He said sneaking a small vessel through the strait under cover of darkness to export 100 or 200 barrels of oil does not mean the waterway is open.
September has nevertheless brought a partial recovery in oil flows through the chokepoint. Exports are set to hit almost 10 million barrels per day, about half the volume seen before the war, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters.
