The ceasefire's shaky foundations
The June 19 agreement resulted from intense US-mediated diplomacy. The framework envisioned a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese army into vacated areas, and the eventual disarmament of Hezbollah forces in the region.
Yet Lebanon has reported multiple Israeli airstrikes since the agreement took effect, with civilians frequently caught in the crossfire.
Regional stakes and what comes next
Beirut lacks the military capacity to enforce the ceasefire on its own terms and remains dependent on international pressure, primarily from the US, to restrain Israeli operations.
Hezbollah's signaling of potential retaliation introduces significant risk. The group has historically been disciplined about choosing when and how to escalate, but a cycle of tit-for-tat strikes during an active ceasefire creates the conditions for miscalculation.
