Microsoft's stock jumped 15.5% on July 30, adding about $450 billion in market value in a single session — the largest one-day gain by any company on record — after a fiscal fourth-quarter report paired 18% revenue growth with guidance for Azure to grow about 45% in constant currency. The stock still trades about 12% below its 52-week high, and six prior record days at Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Nvidia produced mixed results in the months that followed.

Shares closed 15.5% higher at $451.10 on July 30, after a fiscal fourth-quarter report paired 18% revenue growth with guidance for Azure, the company's cloud computing platform, to grow about 45% in constant currency in the fiscal first quarter. That gain is the largest one-day market value increase by any company on record, topping the prior record of Nvidia's $441 billion jump on April 9, 2025.

The move came inside a drawdown, not a rally. Microsoft entered the earnings report down more than 18% for the year. Even after adding roughly another 8% since the record close to around $487, the stock still trades about 12% below its 52-week high of $553.72.

Six record days, mixed outcomes

Four other companies have logged comparable single-day gains since February 2022. Amazon added $190 billion on Feb. 4, 2022. Apple followed with a $191 billion gain on Nov. 10, 2022, on a day a cooler inflation reading lifted the broader market.

Meta Platforms added $197 billion on Feb. 2, 2024, after announcing its first dividend. Nvidia did it three times, gaining $277 billion in February 2024, about $330 billion that July, and $441 billion on April 9, 2025.

What followed for each

The aftermath split. Amazon's stock was about 10% lower six months later and had lost more than 40% by the end of 2022 as rising interest rates weighed on growth stocks broadly; shares needed almost two years to reclaim their record-day close. Apple's record day aged better: shares were up about 18% six months later and about 27% after a year.

Meta's path was rougher at first: shares fell back below their record-day close within three months, sat about flat six months out, then rose more than 40% a year later. Nvidia's three episodes split too — shares rose nearly 60% in the six months after the February 2024 record, dropped about 14% in three trading days after the July 2024 record during that August's growth scare, then rose more than 60% in the six months after the April 2025 record.

Three winners, two that went nowhere for six months, and one outright loser: the size of the record day alone said little about the following two quarters. What mattered more, in most cases, was whether the growth that caused the pop kept showing up — Nvidia's data center revenue kept climbing, Meta's advertising growth held up, while Amazon's growth slowed as rates rose.

Azure's guidance carries the weight now

Microsoft's fiscal year, which closed June 30, gave shareholders plenty to work with. Revenue climbed 18% year over year to $331.8 billion, earnings per share rose 32% to $17.95, and net income increased 31%. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter alone, up 27% year over year, while Azure's annual revenue topped $100 billion for the first time.

The 45% constant-currency Azure guidance is the figure that set off the record day, and it's the number likely to be checked each quarter from here. Shares currently trade at about 25 times forward earnings.
