Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has rejected warnings that unchecked artificial intelligence development threatens humanity's survival, calling the fears overblown. His pushback comes as Nvidia stock recovers to new highs and the company deepens its reach into new industries, including a joint AI drug-discovery lab with Eli Lilly worth up to $1 billion.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed warnings that artificial intelligence poses an existential risk, pushing back against a narrative that rattled AI stocks last month. The debate flared in September when an Anthropic researcher quit the company and said publicly that he believed unchecked AI development could put humanity at risk of extinction within a decade.

AI stocks as a group fell after the note went viral in mid-September, though the reaction proved short-lived. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Elon Musk all said afterward that they saw real dangers in the technology. Huang took a different view.

Huang calls the warnings irresponsible

Speaking to CBS News, Huang said 2030 would not mark the end of the world. According to CBS News: "Scaring people is unnecessary. It is irresponsible." He also rejected the idea that his stance might be shaped by Nvidia's stake in continued AI spending, saying the company's success depends on deploying its products safely.

Nvidia keeps expanding despite the debate

Nvidia hasn't joined the push for a development slowdown, nor has it changed its guidance. The company has instead kept signing partnerships that extend its reach beyond chips. On January 12, 2026, Nvidia and Eli Lilly announced plans to co-invest up to $1 billion over five years in an AI co-innovation lab in the San Francisco Bay Area aimed at drug discovery.

The lab will train foundation models for biology and chemistry on Nvidia's BioNeMo platform and its upcoming Vera Rubin architecture, with continuous learning systems for AI-assisted drug discovery set to begin running in early 2026. It builds on a 2025 deal in which the two companies set up a supercomputer for Lilly featuring over 1,000 Grace Blackwell GPUs.

Wall Street stays on board

Nvidia has grown from a relatively obscure chip designer into the only company worth more than $5 trillion, built on unrelenting demand for the GPUs that power generative AI. Its market cap reflects unrelenting demand for the GPUs that power generative AI. That growth has been 11-fold over the past five years, and revenue growth has recently accelerated even against a much larger base.

Nvidia stock fell after the September warnings but has since bounced back to hit a new high this week. Wall Street expects a 91% year-over-year revenue increase in the current quarter. For now, the market is siding with Huang.
