Nvidia added roughly $300 billion in market value in a single session on August 27, the largest one-day market-cap gain any company has recorded. The jump followed a fiscal Q2 2026 earnings report that beat revenue expectations by roughly $4 billion.

Nvidia added roughly $300 billion to its market capitalization in one trading session on August 27, the largest single-day market-value gain any company has ever recorded. Shares climbed as much as 9% intraday, the chipmaker's strongest performance since April 2025.

The catalyst was straightforward: Nvidia printed a quarter far above expectations. Fiscal Q2 2026 revenue landed at $96.2 billion, a 106% jump from the same period a year ago and roughly $4 billion above consensus estimates of $92.2 billion.

The numbers behind the surge

Nvidia's data-center division generated $89 billion in revenue during the quarter, a 117% year-over-year increase. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.22.

The company also issued a long-term revenue growth forecast of approximately 70% for fiscal 2028, well above the 44-45% Wall Street had been modeling. After the rally, Nvidia's market capitalization settled in a range between $5.1 trillion and $5.5 trillion, reinforcing its position as the most valuable publicly traded company.

A rebound from a tepid year

As of mid-year, shares were up only about 12% year-to-date. Investors had worried that major cloud customers might pull back on AI infrastructure spending after years of aggressive buildouts, and OpenAI's push to develop custom in-house chips raised questions about the durability of Nvidia's dominance in AI training hardware.

The earnings report moved the broader semiconductor complex too, with AI-linked chip stocks rallying in sympathy. The market-cap addition of roughly $295-325 billion in a single session puts the move in rare company — Apple had briefly held the record for the largest single-day market-cap gain before Nvidia reclaimed it.
