The chipmaker is in non-binding talks to back debt for Nscale's West Virginia AI data center campus. The guarantees could be worth billions, and the campus has Anthropic lined up as a tenant. Nvidia would become supplier, shareholder and something close to a guarantor at once.
Nvidia is in advanced talks to put its own credit on the line for Nscale, a UK-based AI cloud provider building a data center campus in West Virginia. The guarantees could be worth billions and are meant to help Nscale borrow the money it needs to build.
The chipmaker already sells the chips and already owns a piece of the company. Now it may also co-sign the loan.
Anthropic's $45 billion rental anchors the project
The campus is aimed at one marquee tenant. In August 2026, Anthropic agreed to pay approximately $45 billion to rent computing capacity from the first building, a 460-megawatt facility.
The credit backing would cover electricity and construction costs. The hardware inside would be Nvidia's own, including its next-generation Vera Rubin processors. Part of the money Nvidia helps unlock would therefore flow back toward its newest products.
Talks remain non-binding
No formal agreements have been signed, so the size, structure and final shape of any guarantee could still change or fall apart entirely. The Information first reported the discussions on October 29, 2026, and Bloomberg and Reuters confirmed the talks the same day.
This would not be Nvidia's first bet on Nscale. The chipmaker has already invested in the company, and other Nvidia-backed AI firms, including CoreWeave and Firmus, have faced similar financing strains.
Exposure is the downside for Nvidia
For Nscale, a guarantee could mean easier access to debt and possibly better terms than it could secure alone. For Anthropic, if financing support helps Nscale cover power and construction, it lowers the risk that the 460-megawatt facility arrives late or not at all.
Nvidia, however, takes on risk. If a guaranteed borrower stumbles, the guarantor can end up on the hook, so Nvidia would be exposed to how a smaller cloud provider manages a large construction project.
Three things are worth watching: whether the talks become a signed agreement and at what size, how lenders price Nscale's debt if Nvidia's backing materializes, and whether similar arrangements emerge for other Nvidia-backed operators.
