Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told Salesforce's Dreamforce conference that AI companies don't need new laws or regulations, splitting from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on the same stage. The divergence came days after an Anthropic researcher's viral warning about AI risk and Amodei's weekend essay calling for the industry to slow down.

Huang rejects new AI regulation

Speaking alongside Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff in San Francisco on Tuesday, Huang said the AI industry doesn't need new laws or regulations, arguing that market forces already keep companies in check. According to the BBC: "We don't need new laws or regulations." Huang said speed and safety are not a false choice and that companies can pursue both at once, while adding that developers should pause if they doubt a product is ready. He also said safety is fundamentally an engineering problem, leaving it to model developers to act responsibly.

Amodei and Altman push the opposite view

Amodei took the stage first with Benioff, days after he published an essay over the weekend urging the industry to slow the pace of model development. His proposal followed an AI researcher who quit Anthropic raising alarm about the technology's potential for catastrophic harm the previous week. Altman, appearing with Benioff later in the day, said safety and monitoring must come before capability given the power of existing models. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Google DeepMind Chair Demis Hassabis also voiced support for Amodei's proposal.

Salesforce ties deepen with both companies

Benioff has longstanding relationships with both Huang and Amodei, and Dreamforce reflected that. On Tuesday, Salesforce and Nvidia announced a new reasoning model for the Agentforce platform, built on one of Nvidia's open-weight Nemotron models. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark separately told the BBC that leaving AI as a totally unregulated industry carried immense risk. Benioff, for his part, said companies that choose to slow down or speed up should be held accountable either way.
