Nvidia's revenue surged 106% year over year to $96.2 billion last quarter, yet the stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 24.2. Hyperscaler cloud backlogs and AI token processing keep climbing, but investors are pricing in doubt over how long the AI infrastructure build-out can last.

Nvidia just reported results that crushed Wall Street estimates, with sales up 106% year over year to $96.2 billion and diluted earnings per share up 128%. Yet the stock's forward P/E ratio sits at 24.2 — a valuation that looks inexpensive against the growth Nvidia keeps posting.

Nvidia shares have jumped 920% over five years as of September 3, making the company the world's most valuable enterprise. The business sells the data center GPUs that power AI model training and inference, so its results track the broader AI spending cycle closely.

Demand signals keep climbing

Usage metrics point the same way. Alphabet's model APIs processed 22 billion tokens per minute last quarter, up from 16 billion three months earlier. OpenAI and Anthropic are both reportedly planning trillion-dollar initial public offerings while posting fast-growing revenue and expanding user bases.

Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud add to the picture: as of June 30, the three hyperscalers held a combined $1.7 trillion in cloud backlogs. Nvidia Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress estimates hyperscaler capital expenditures will reach $1.3 trillion in 2027, and management believes annual AI infrastructure spending will climb to between $3 trillion and $4 trillion before the end of the decade.

On the Q2 2027 earnings call, Kress said the company expects 70% revenue growth in fiscal 2028. If consensus estimates hold and margins stay steady, that outlook implies Nvidia would report $461 billion in operating income next fiscal year.

Why the market still hedges

Even so, the market is pricing in uncertainty over how long the AI boom can last. The 24.2 forward P/E reflects that caution: enterprises could conclude the returns on AI spending arrive later than expected, which could prompt budget cuts. Any evidence that AI spending is slowing would likely push sell-side analysts to lower Nvidia's profit estimates, pressuring the share price.

Nvidia's growth story also depends on fending off rivals developing competing chips. For now, quarterly results remain the market's clearest signal of whether the spending cycle behind Nvidia's numbers keeps holding up.
