A strong October U.S. jobs report has pushed up futures-market odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike in December. Payrolls beat the consensus forecast by a wide margin, and unemployment fell to 4.1%.
Nonfarm payrolls increased by 165,000 in October, well above the consensus forecast of 65,000. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.1%, and the data has intensified speculation about a Federal Reserve rate hike in December.
Futures markets shifted noticeably. The probability of a 25-basis-point hike is now estimated between 76% and 79%, up from around two-thirds before the report's release.
The Fed's current target range for the federal funds rate stands at 3.75% to 4.00%, following its last hike in September. Upward revisions to previous months' payrolls, together with the lower unemployment rate, are consistent with a supportive environment for another increase, according to Crypto Briefing.
Inflation metrics such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index will be pivotal in shaping market expectations. Statements from Fed officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, could also move pricing if they point to a more hawkish stance.
Observers will also watch any updates to the Federal Open Market Committee's projections, which could offer more insight into further rate hikes in 2026.
