OpenAI has held early talks with large investors about a new funding round that would value the company at about $1.2 trillion ahead of a future IPO, the Financial Times reported. The talks were initiated by investors, not OpenAI, and come months after the company closed an $122 billion round at an $852 billion valuation.
OpenAI has recently discussed a fresh capital raise with large investors that would push the ChatGPT maker's valuation to about $1.2 trillion before it goes public, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The conversations are at an early stage, and the figure could still change over the coming months.
According to the report, investors initiated the talks rather than OpenAI itself. OpenAI declined to comment on the report.
The discussed figure would mark a sharp rise from OpenAI's last funding round. In March, the company closed a round with $122 billion in committed capital. That round valued OpenAI at $852 billion.
Yet CEO Sam Altman said on Saturday that OpenAI would not go public in 2026, citing safety concerns over artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, OpenAI and rival Anthropic are pushing for greater regulation of artificial intelligence to ensure the technology develops safely, amid concerns about security and misuse.
Anthropic, for its part, is expected to begin marketing its own IPO in mid-October at the earliest and complete the listing days before the U.S. midterm elections in November, Reuters reported earlier this month.
