RTX Backlog Growth Underpins Raised 2026 Sales Guidance

RTX shares slipped as investors weighed the defense and aerospace giant's growing order backlog against its ability to execute profitably. Management recently raised its adjusted 2026 sales estimate to $95 billion to $96 billion, with the backlog seen as the key leading indicator behind that growth.

RTX shares fell 1.12% to $209.91, even as the company's backlog continues to expand amid surging orders across both its commercial aerospace and defense businesses. That backlog sits at the center of the investment case for the stock, since order growth feeding into higher-quality backlog is a leading signal for future revenue and earnings.

Backlog underpins raised 2026 sales guidance

The scale of the backlog helps explain why management recently upgraded its estimate for adjusted 2026 sales to a range of $95 billion to $96 billion. Backlog growth is not just about locking in a few years of sales, however; it depends on order growth continuing to outpace sales growth. It also helps de-risk RTX from short-term economic weakness that could otherwise hit earnings and cash flow, an important buffer for a company that must spend billions developing long-cycle programs such as aircraft engines, missiles, and space and intelligence technology.

Aftermarket and defense revenue drive the long-term case

RTX's commercial aerospace equipment backlog feeds long-term growth in services through highly profitable aftermarket sales, including parts for Pratt & Whitney engines on Airbus A320 aircraft. Collins Aerospace's systems backlog similarly leads to high-margin recurring revenue as those commercial and defense systems get used in the field. Meanwhile, the defense backlog spread across RTX, Collins Aerospace, and Pratt & Whitney creates a steady stream of government-backed revenue.

Execution remains the open question

Backlog growth enhances earnings visibility and supports long-term earnings and cash flow tied to servicing a growing installed base of aerospace and defense equipment. Still, RTX has to execute on that backlog and ensure the work it takes on is profitable, which isn't always straightforward in a defense sector where governments are pushing harder for favorable contract terms. Investors should keep watching management's comments on margin expansion, since backlog growth and margin gains ideally move together.
