The S&P 500 (US500) is pushing back toward its all-time highs even as elevated valuations, AI-sector jitters and high interest rates argue for a deeper pullback. Bears have repeatedly failed to confirm a breakdown, and a slide in WTI crude from near $100 toward $90 has helped buyers stay in control.
The US500 index is again testing its record highs, despite a string of headwinds that could have triggered a deeper correction. Elevated valuations, AI-sector concerns, expensive oil and still-high interest rates remain live risks, yet none of them has produced a confirmed technical breakdown.
Sellers keep failing to hold the lows
Bears have had several chances to press the index into a deeper corrective phase, but the decline never received sufficient technical confirmation. Price kept holding key structural levels, and every attempt to extend the move lower attracted fresh buyers instead. As a result, the market swung back toward the top of its range and approached its highs again.
Fundamental reasons for a correction can exist without the market actually moving lower. As long as the bullish structure holds, sellers still need price to confirm a break before a deeper downside scenario takes over.
A liquidity sweep triggers another short squeeze
Part of the recent move traces back to another liquidity sweep: price dipped below local lows but sellers failed to hold control, and the market recovered above those levels quickly. That kind of reaction can force traders holding short positions to close them as price turns higher, and the resulting buying can amplify the short squeeze into a broader move. The reaction after the sweep, rather than the sweep itself, is what matters here.
Falling oil eases inflation worries
WTI crude's run toward the $100 area had stoked inflation concerns and fears of tighter monetary policy. However, its subsequent slide back toward $90 has eased some of that pressure, which matters for equities at a time when rates are already elevated. That move has become another factor supporting the broader risk-on tone.
AI optimism keeps big tech supported
Renewed optimism around artificial intelligence, following recent developments involving Meta, has also helped the index. Large technology names carry heavy weight in the US500, so continued confidence in AI-driven earnings growth can keep the index supported even as high valuations persist.
What would change the picture
For the bearish case to gain traction, sellers need a confirmed break of important support followed by lower highs and lower lows below it. Until that happens, a correction remains a risk on paper rather than a trend in price.
