Trump Media & Technology Group is stepping back from its Bitcoin treasury strategy and refocusing on its core media business after mounting crypto losses. The Motley Fool reports a $190 million paper loss on TMTG's crypto holdings, while separate first-half figures cited by Crypto Briefing put the company's digital-asset losses far higher, at $360.6 million.
Trump Media & Technology Group has reported a $190 million paper loss on its crypto holdings, according to The Motley Fool, as Bitcoin's decline over more than ten months weighs on the company's treasury bet. As a result, the company will pivot away from Bitcoin and back into its core media and advertising business.
Holdings shrink as losses mount
Trump Media announced last summer that it would become a Bitcoin treasury company, and it now holds 12,062 Bitcoins, worth nearly $755 million at today's prices, Motley Fool reported. Crypto Briefing, citing separate first-half figures, says the company posted $360.6 million in digital-asset losses for the first half of 2026. The firm's net loss reached $238.1 million in the second quarter alone. As of June 30, those figures show TMTG holding 9,477 BTC valued at roughly $557.1 million, down from $836 million earlier in the year.
The company also amassed roughly 756.1 million CRO tokens, the native cryptocurrency of the Crypto.com exchange, a position valued at just $40.6 million as of the end of June. On August 7, 2026, TMTG, Crypto.com, and investment firm Yorkville terminated their proposed CRO Strategy deal and ETF partnership, citing unfavorable market conditions.
New CEO steers back to media
The retreat comes under interim CEO Kevin McGurn, who appears to be steering the company toward a more conventional media business model. The plan now centers on monetizing Truth Social, potentially through paid features, rather than expanding the digital asset treasury built up through 2025.
Trump Media is not alone in the reversal. According to Motley Fool, Strategy — the company that once told investors "Never sell your Bitcoin" — has reported a nearly $10 billion paper loss on its Bitcoin holdings last quarter, after buying its 840,447 BTC at an average price of $75,482 while Bitcoin trades near $63,000.
