U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to open a trade investigation into the European Union after Brussels fined Alphabet's Google €890 million ($1 billion). Trump branded the penalty illegal and said Washington would act under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

President Donald Trump pledged on Friday to open a trade investigation into the European Union after the bloc fined Alphabet's Google, accusing the EU of robbing American companies. He called the penalty illegal and unethical.

The threat answers a decision handed down a day earlier. The European Commission fined Google €890 million ($1 billion) on Thursday for flouting EU rules meant to rein in the power of Big Tech.

According to Reuters, Trump vowed to open a Section 301 investigation under the Trade Act of 1974: "We will immediately initiate a 301 Investigation into the practice of "ROBBING" American Companies".

He wrote that the EU would pay a very big price for conduct he described as illegal and highly unethical.
