Wells Fargo cut its year-end 2026 S&P 500 target to 7,700 from 7,950 and warned of 5%-10% near-term downside, citing stretched valuation, record equity positioning and fading liquidity. The bank still raised its longer-term earnings estimates and named Wednesday's Federal Reserve meeting as the next catalyst.
Wells Fargo lowered its year-end 2026 S&P 500 target to 7,700 from 7,950. The bank warned of potential near-term downside of 5% to 10%, even as it still expects earnings to keep growing.
Analysts led by Ohsung Kwon raised their earnings-per-share forecasts to $425 for 2027 and $460 for 2028. Yet according to Wells Fargo: "entering late innings of the cycle" is how the firm described current market conditions.
Investors hold record equity exposure
Wells Fargo estimates investors currently allocate 72% of their portfolios to equities, the highest share since 1969. With the 10-year Treasury yield approaching 5%, the firm's own valuation framework would call for an allocation of approximately 60%.
That 12-percentage-point gap is the widest since 1969, wider than during the Tech Bubble. Wells Fargo said this kind of gap has historically been correlated with subsequent five-year excess equity returns.
Valuation nears dot-com extremes
Separately, the S&P 500's Shiller CAPE ratio stood at 40.5 at Wednesday's close. That is near its dot-com-era peak of 44.2 in 2000. Once that bubble burst, the index plummeted 49%.
Fed meeting looms as next catalyst
Wells Fargo flagged Wednesday's Federal Reserve meeting on interest rates as a potential catalyst. The market-implied probability of a rate move has risen to 94% after a higher-than-expected CPI reading. The firm also pointed to a September 24 summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping as another catalyst, though it said markets currently anticipate a limited outcome.
As part of its revised outlook, Wells Fargo downgraded technology to equal-weight and upgraded health care to overweight. Its Liquidity Indicator has fallen to its lowest level of the year and is expected to decline further through November.
The bank maintained its preference for quality stocks over higher-beta names, noting its Complacency Indicator remains elevated.
