Iraq halted movement through the Shalamcheh border crossing after an airstrike hit the Iranian side, killing one Iraqi civilian and wounding five others. Omar al-Waeli, head of Iraq’s Border Ports, announced the closure once the strike struck the Iranian side of the transit point.
Iran’s state-run Tasnim news agency reported that the person killed was an Iraqi civilian. Security sources said the airstrike hit a passenger reception area on the Iranian side of the crossing.
Footage circulating on social media showed black smoke rising from the site, with damage inside the building and debris scattered around. According to the reports, the crossing sustained visible damage after the strike. As a result, Waeli said Iraq suspended both commercial and passenger movement through the route.
The Shalamcheh crossing is commonly used by Iraqi and Iranian travelers moving by land, particularly during holiday seasons and religious pilgrimage periods. The area also carries historical weight from the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, when it became one of the conflict’s main frontlines.
Iraqi forces used the crossing as a key invasion route at the start of that war, and the surrounding area saw some of the fighting’s heaviest and deadliest battles. For now, the strike leaves the border point closed to both trade and travelers.
