Alphabet shares fell 4% on August 5 after Demis Hassabis moved from CEO of Google DeepMind into a chair and chief scientist role, handing daily operations to Koray Kavukcuoglu. The reshuffle coincided with the departure of legendary engineer Jeff Dean and three other prominent AI researchers, who left to start a new company.
Alphabet shares fell 4% immediately after the announcement that Demis Hassabis would step back from running Google DeepMind day to day. The company restructured its entire AI leadership hierarchy on August 5, shifting Hassabis into a newly created dual role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.
Hassabis moves to a strategic role
Hassabis will now focus on what the company calls high-level frameworks for artificial general intelligence and the societal implications of advanced AI. He keeps leading Isomorphic Labs, his AI-driven drug discovery venture, and continues advising on DeepMind's models and research.
Operational control passes to Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's former Chief Technology Officer, who was promoted to Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind and now reports directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu also keeps the Chief AI Architect title he picked up in June 2025.
A wave of senior departures
The reshuffle landed the same day Jeff Dean and three other prominent researchers — Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat — left Google to start a new AI company. The stock decline reflects anxiety about execution risk, since investors had trusted Hassabis to keep Google competitive in the AI race, and his shift to an advisory role raises questions about whether DeepMind can maintain its pace of innovation under new leadership.
Kavukcuoglu's path to the top
Kavukcuoglu has spent 13 years at DeepMind, predating Google's acquisition of the lab in 2014. He played a role in developing the DQN reinforcement learning algorithm, which taught AI systems to play Atari games at superhuman levels, and helped create WaveNet, an audio generative model that was among the first to produce realistic synthetic content.
Pichai has led Google since 2015 and Alphabet since 2019, and no successor has been named. But Hassabis built DeepMind from the ground up, including its AlphaFold breakthrough, and handing operational control to his former deputy could create friction that occasionally becomes public at tech companies, introducing uncertainty into Alphabet's AI roadmap.
