AMD's earnings report will turn on whether MI450 demand converts into signed backlog, and how quickly its Helios rackscale system can lift AI gross margins. Anthropic has committed to a deployment that mostly lands in 2027 and beyond, while Microsoft's Azure shipments are set to begin in the second half of 2026, leaving backlog quality and the margin trajectory as the two numbers investors are watching closest.

AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership under which Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 series GPUs, with the first gigawatt starting in the first half of 2027. As part of the deal, AMD also committed up to $5 billion in Anthropic equity.

Microsoft is the other anchor customer. AMD said Azure will ramp Helios at scale, with shipments to customers including Microsoft beginning in the second half of 2026.

Shipment timing still lags the announcements

Neither commitment converts cleanly into near-term revenue. Reporters quoted Lisa Su saying Helios is in full production, with shipments slated to start at the end of Q3 2026. OpenAI's compute lead separately said the company expects to begin deploying Helios racks later in 2026 and accelerate through 2027.

Rack economics will decide the margin path

A single Helios rack integrates 72 GPUs and up to 31 TB of HBM4 memory. Peak throughput reaches up to 2.9 exaflops FP4.

AMD claims roughly 30% more tokens per dollar than the leading alternative. If customers validate that pricing claim in the field, margins can improve without a jump in volume. HBM4 costs, packaging yields, and rack mix will still determine how much of that revenue reaches the bottom line, and early ramps tend to be margin-dilutive before yields mature.

Backlog quality matters more than backlog size

Analysts will press for named customers, signed delivery windows, and rack counts rather than broad estimates, since agreements without shipment schedules say little about near-term revenue. Supply constraints on HBM4 and substrates, discount-driven deal terms, and slower-than-expected adoption of AMD's ROCm software stack remain the clearest risks to the ramp.
