Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo sold out soon after launch, and the company cannot say when more units will arrive. Apple still reported higher iPhone and Mac sales for the quarter, while supply limits and memory costs remain concerns.

Apple does not know when more iPhone Duo units will be available, after the foldable phone sold out when it went on sale just over a week ago. Chief operating officer Sabhi Kahn told analysts the company cannot yet predict when supply will meet demand.

According to Kahn, as reported by the BBC: "really hard to predict when supply and demand will be in balance". The phone sells for $1,999, and chief executive John Ternus said he was pleased with the early reaction.

Cracked screens add to the launch

Some buyers have seen their screens crack. Last week, Apple said it would replace any phones hit by an issue that caused a small number of the devices to crack along the inside fold. Apple executives did not mention any Duo issues during the earnings call.

iPhone and Mac sales rise

Apple said it sold more iPhones over the last year than it ever has before. In the three months to 26 September, iPhone sales rose 17% to $57bn, a period that did not include Duo sales.

Mac sales grew 27% to $10.7bn, another record. However, iPad sales fell 10% and wearables sales fell 7%. Overall sales for the year rose 15% to $479bn.

Chip and memory costs stay in focus

Kahn said most Apple devices still face supply constraints, driven in part by difficulty in getting enough microprocessors with advanced nodes. He expects them to continue into next year, particularly for iPads and Macs.

Ternus added that Apple still sees unprecedented cost increases for memory. Higher memory prices have led Apple to raise prices on essentially all of its hardware products by around 20%.

Sunil Krishnan of Aviva Investors told the BBC's Today programme that Apple posted reasonably solid results, though concerns remain over guidance on profit margins and memory chip costs.
