Bitcoin dropped below $83,000 before the US open, and nearly $42 million in long positions were liquidated. The price recovered to around $83,100 shortly afterward. The research behind the report describes the episode as a leverage flush, not a reaction to new fundamentals.

Bitcoin dropped below $83,000, and traders betting on higher prices took the loss. Nearly $42 million in long positions were liquidated before US stock markets opened.

The wipeout was reportedly part of a bigger purge. Close to $696 million in positions were cleared across a 24-hour window, mostly from longs.

A quick dip, then a recovery

The move came on October 8, 2026, and intraday lows ranged between $82,880 and $83,500, depending on the venue and data source. Bitcoin then recovered to around $83,100.

Forced closures of leveraged positions act as sell orders in a long-heavy market. Those sales push the price lower, which triggers more liquidations. The research calls this episode a leverage flush rather than a response to big news, and says analysts did not tie it to any meaningful change in market fundamentals.

Oil, ETF outflows and rising open interest

Oil prices were rising on geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, adding macro anxiety to risk assets. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds were also seeing ongoing outflows, according to the report.

Meanwhile, open interest in Bitcoin derivatives had been climbing. Bitcoin had also recently traded at highs between $85,000 and $87,000, and profit-taking after that run appears to have contributed to the pullback.

A price zone that keeps returning

Throughout 2026, the $83,000 to $84,000 band has acted as a critical inflection point, according to the research. Breaks through it have repeatedly set off liquidation cascades, with totals often running into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The research characterizes the latest move as mechanical unwinding, not a sustained wave of selling.
