Bitcoin dropped below $85,000 on Wednesday, falling under the $86,000 average cost basis of shares bought through U.S. spot ETFs. The slide came as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5% for the first time since 2007, and the broader crypto market turned lower alongside U.S. stocks and gold.
Bitcoin Breaks Below The ETF Cost Basis
Bitcoin fell through $85,000 on Wednesday and ended the U.S. session 1.9% below the average cost of every share bought through U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, Bitfinex analysts said. The two sessions of ETF creations that had carried the market higher are now underwater: bitcoin took in $999.0 million on Monday and $714.7 million on Tuesday, and it has since traded down through the price at which that money came in.
It last changed hands at $84,365.05, down 2.1% over 24 hours and up 11.5% over seven days, after trading between $83,654.39 and $87,251.25. According to Bitfinex analysts: "both demand engines are holding profitable positions simultaneously".
Treasury Yields Hit A 19-Year High
The pressure built as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5% on Wednesday, its highest level since 2007, after September's flash PMI data came in ahead of forecasts. Bitcoin dropped further in the afternoon around the time the U.S. Treasury said it will purchase up to $6 billion of longer-dated government debt on Thursday.
Rising yields are typically a headwind for bitcoin's price, since an asset that generates no income becomes less attractive when safe government bonds pay 5%. Higher rates also tend to strengthen the dollar and dampen appetite for risk-on assets.
Funding Turns Negative As The Market Retreats
Total crypto market value fell 2.27% to $2.96 trillion, with XRP down 5.8%, Dogecoin 8.3% and Hedera 9.9%. The OKX bitcoin swap's funding rate turned negative at -0.0022% for the period settling at midnight UTC, meaning shorts now pay longs. Tuesday's reading had been positive at 0.00019%.
U.S. equities and gold fell alongside crypto. The S&P 500 closed down 0.75%, and front-month Comex gold slid 1.30% to $4,319.60 an ounce.
