Bitcoin has surged more than 25% and broken above $81,000, yet trader sentiment has not followed the move higher. The gap between price and sentiment raises the question of whether the rally still has room to run or is losing steam near a key resistance zone.
Bitcoin has broken above $81,000, overcoming the June price crash, while bears keep trying to hold the price below $80,000. However, market sentiment has begun to fade even as the price climbs, meaning the crowd has not followed with the same optimism. This growing disconnect raises the question of whether bitcoin is climbing a wall of disbelief that could fuel another leg higher, or whether fading sentiment is warning that the rally is running out of steam.
Price Outpaces Sentiment
Santiment data cited in the report shows the price surged from roughly $62,800 to $81,272, while weighted sentiment stayed muted and has now slipped to negative 0.023. The seven-day average sentiment stands at just positive 0.009, well below levels typically tied to widespread euphoria.
After the 25% surge, traders were expected to grow increasingly bullish. Instead, sentiment peaked around August 19 and then faded, a sign of disbelief rather than euphoria.
The move appears driven by positioning and macro catalysts, including a recent Treasury announcement that involved substantial short covering. In previous rallies, retail traders grew euphoric and piled into bitcoin; that pattern is absent this time.
Resistance Zone Sets Up a Critical Test
Bitcoin has entered a resistance zone between $79,000 and $80,000, a barrier that has held since early 2026. A decisive daily close above $80,500 could open the door toward the pivotal resistance at $83,550. The RSI has surged into overbought territory and is consolidating there, suggesting buyers hold control but also raising the risk of a short-term cooldown.
Meanwhile, open interest has dropped to roughly 48,000 from its recent peak, suggesting a significant portion of leveraged positions has been flushed out during the rally. Together, strong momentum, an overbought RSI, and declining open interest make the $80,000-to-$85,000 area a crucial test for bitcoin.
