Bitcoin climbed back above $85,000 on Sunday after a choppy previous week in which it swung between roughly $82,500 and $87,000. The coin spiked within minutes of cooler-than-expected PCE inflation data on Wednesday and again after a weaker-than-expected US jobs report on Friday, with both moves partly reversing soon after. Most large-cap altcoins also edged higher, and total crypto market capitalization rose to $2.910 trillion.
Bitcoin's price climbed past $85,000 on Sunday morning, recovering after the sharp volatility that hit the market on Friday following the release of the US jobs report. Ether is challenging the $2,700 resistance level, while XRP has risen to $1.50.
A Choppy Week for Bitcoin
Bitcoin's previous week began with a decline that took it from the upper boundary of its trading range at $85,000 down to just under the lower boundary at $82,500. The next few days were choppy, then cooler-than-expected PCE inflation data arrived on Wednesday, and bitcoin jumped to $85,600 within minutes before reversing just as fast.
Thursday was calmer, with the coin trading between $82,500 and $84,000. It began climbing again on Friday, boosted by a much weaker-than-expected US jobs report, and the initial move pushed bitcoin past $87,000 for the first time in about ten days.
Bulls Defend the Recovery
The rally reversed almost immediately, however, as bitcoin was rejected near $87,000 and dumped to under $84,000 within hours. Buyers then stepped in, helping the coin recover to $84,000 on Saturday, and it has edged higher to over $85,000 as of Sunday.
Bitcoin's market capitalization has climbed to $1.710 trillion on CoinMarketCap. Its dominance over the rest of the market has stayed flat at 59%.
Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Higher
Most other large-cap altcoins have risen by about 1-2% alongside bitcoin. BNB has climbed 2.9% to approach $800. The total crypto market cap has grown by roughly $30 billion over the day to reach $2.910 trillion on CoinMarketCap.
