Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum is evolving into a "cryptographic world computer" that fuses blockchain consensus with zero-knowledge proofs, data sampling and privacy tools. He named the 2027 Hegotá fork as likely the last upgrade that would still look familiar to a 2015-era Ethereum developer, with deeper cryptographic changes to follow.

Vitalik Buterin published an essay on Sept. 27 titled The Cryptographic World Computer, arguing that calling Ethereum simply a blockchain has become increasingly incomplete. He expects the network's future architecture to combine blockchain consensus with zero-knowledge proofs, data sampling, privacy technology and decentralized off-chain computation.

Hegotá could close the "normal" upgrade era

Buterin's essay describes Hegotá, the fork Ethereum's roadmap currently places in 2027 after Glamsterdam in the fourth quarter of 2026, as likely to be Ethereum's last conventional upgrade. Two proposals are already scheduled for it: FOCIL (EIP-7805), which lets a committee of validators build transaction inclusion lists that block builders must honor, and Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), which let accounts choose their own authorization method.

Frame Transactions could support social recovery, spending controls, sponsored gas and future quantum-resistant signatures at the protocol level. Buterin also introduced a walkaway test for decentralized apps, asking whether an application would keep functioning if its original developers disappeared.

Verification shifts from re-execution to sampling

Ethereum's PeerDAS system, already live through the Fusaka upgrade, lets nodes verify data availability by sampling parts of a dataset instead of downloading all of it. Buterin frames the broader shift as moving away from full re-download and recompute verification toward proof checks paired with data sampling, a change he says could lower the hardware needed for strong verification guarantees.

A related draft, EIP-8288, authored by Buterin and Thomas Coratger, would let mempool nodes aggregate many signatures and STARK proofs into a single recursive proof before a block builder processes them.

Quantum resistance targeted for 2029

The Ethereum Foundation's Protocol Cluster said on Sept. 7 that it is targeting quantum resistance across Ethereum's execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029. Buterin expects the network's proof-of-stake consensus to keep evolving too. Research is moving from single-slot finality toward a one-round design called Minimmit under the Lean Ethereum program.

According to Buterin: "Structuring computation lets the blockchain more effectively focus on its job."

Buterin described a more speculative technology, indistinguishability obfuscation, as a possible later development rather than something required by the architecture he outlined.
