Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya warns that Bitcoin could lose its value because of security risks, limited privacy and difficulty upgrading its technology. He points to AI and quantum computing as possible threats to its cryptographic protections.

Chamath Palihapitiya says Bitcoin could eventually go to zero. The billionaire investor argues that security risks, limited financial privacy and difficulties upgrading its technology could erode its value.

Asked in an interview whether Bitcoin was finished, Palihapitiya said it eventually goes to zero: "eventually it gets hacked and then it goes to zero." He also said its growth could be limited.

AI and quantum computing as possible threats

Palihapitiya warned that advanced AI systems could help identify weaknesses in cryptographic systems. He described a hypothetical attack on Bitcoin attributed to its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, in which an attacker steals the coins and profits by shorting Bitcoin if the incident triggers a market decline.

Quantum computing is a separate potential challenge, because sufficiently powerful quantum computers could undermine some cryptographic methods used to secure digital assets. However, no such attack has been demonstrated against Bitcoin's network, and the threat depends on future technological developments.

Palihapitiya said Bitcoin needs to move towards quantum-resistant cryptography. Yet he questioned whether its developer community could agree on and implement the required changes in time.

Public transactions could limit adoption

Palihapitiya argued that Bitcoin's public transaction records expose information about wallet activity, potentially creating security risks for identified holders. He said the limited privacy could also restrict its appeal to central banks and other buyers that require greater confidentiality.

Wallet addresses do not automatically reveal their owners' identities, but blockchain analysis can sometimes link transactions to identifiable individuals. To illustrate the risks of publicly identifying asset owners, he cited reports of kidnappings and other crimes involving cryptocurrency holders in France.

According to Palihapitiya, these concerns could place a ceiling on Bitcoin's long-term growth. He transferred his long-term Bitcoin investment to Digital Currency Group (DCG) in exchange for company equity, an arrangement he said reduced his exposure to cryptocurrency storage and security risks.
