China's Xi Jinping urged BRICS to act as a peacemaker in the Middle East war, telling a summit of the bloc's leaders in New Delhi that the conflict serves no one's interests. He also said China will chair BRICS next year and host its 19th summit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the BRICS bloc to take on a peacemaking role in the Middle East war, addressing a summit of the group's member countries in New Delhi on Saturday.

China will work with other BRICS members toward that goal. According to Reuters, state broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as saying the war does not serve the common interests of the international community: "does not serve the common interests of the international community".

BRICS groups Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Set up in 2009 to challenge a world order dominated by the United States and its Western allies, the bloc's members together account for more than 40% of the world's population and almost a quarter of the global economy.

Xi described BRICS as a leading group within the Global South and a model of self-reliance among emerging and developing economies, urging the bloc to pursue innovation-driven development. He said China will assume the BRICS chairmanship next year and host the group's 19th summit, according to CCTV.
