DefiLlama data tracked 558 blockchains over 24 hours on October 3, 2026, and found that 399 of them, or roughly 71%, generated zero fees. Only seven networks cleared $100,000 in fees over the same window, with Solana the sole chain to top $1 million.
Most blockchains are open for business, but almost none of them have paying customers. DefiLlama's chain fees dashboard tracked 558 blockchains on October 3, 2026, and found that 399 of them generated zero fees over the previous 24 hours, roughly 71% of the entire field.
Most chains barely register
The gap widens further down the list. 443 of the 558 tracked chains collected less than $10 in fees during that same 24-hour window, leaving only a handful of networks doing any meaningful business at all.
Seven chains carry the weight
At the top end, just seven blockchains cleared $100,000 in fees over the period. Tron collected $922,900 and BSC collected $793,900, while Base brought in $114,800 and Robinhood Chain brought in $100,900. Solana was the only network to break the $1 million mark, and Tron and BSC followed close enough to form their own tier just behind it.
Ethereum and Bitcoin landed in fourth and fifth place. Fees measure what users paid to transact rather than how important a network is, so the ranking reflects spending patterns on that day, not a verdict on overall significance.
A pattern, not a blip
This was not an outlier. DefiLlama's data showed similar concentration patterns earlier in 2026, with a small group of leading networks capturing most fee activity, and Canton Network occasionally topping the charts earlier in the year.
For investors, fee generation offers a concrete signal because it reflects people paying real money to do something on a network rather than simply holding a token. Low fees can also be a design choice, so a modest total doesn't automatically mean an empty chain — though a total of exactly zero is harder to explain away.
Robinhood Chain's place among the seven chains above $100,000 shows the top tier isn't locked. For anyone sizing up a new network, a simple question now carries real weight: is anyone paying to use it?
