DogeOS opened a public testnet on Wednesday, bringing EVM-compatible smart contracts to Dogecoin through a zero-knowledge rollup that charges gas fees in DOGE. Dogecoin itself does not yet verify the rollup's proofs, and DOGE trades near $0.094, down 60% over the past year.
DogeOS launched its public testnet on Wednesday as a zero-knowledge rollup built to bring EVM-compatible smart contracts to Dogecoin, with DOGE serving as the native token for transaction fees. The project settles its state to the Dogecoin network while supporting applications for trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets, and games.
Dogecoin does not yet verify the proofs itself
Dogecoin does not currently verify DogeOS's zero-knowledge proofs, DogeOS CEO Jordan Jefferson told The Block. Instead, bridge state transitions require valid proofs together with signatures from a majority of the validator set and a trusted execution environment signer. According to The Block: "We'll share the mainnet timeline as we reach the next development milestones."
A proposed upgrade to Dogecoin Core would eventually let Dogecoin miners verify DogeOS's execution proofs directly, but DogeOS submitted that proposal two months after its funding round and it has not yet been implemented. Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing said he hopes DogeOS becomes a springboard for new startups building on Dogecoin.
DOGE trades near yearly lows as the project expands beyond Musk
DOGE traded around $0.094 at publication time, down 60% over the past year.
DogeOS comes from the team behind the MyDoge wallet, which raised a $6.9 million funding round led by Polychain Capital in May 2025. Jefferson told The Block that the application layer was built to expand Dogecoin's ecosystem beyond its historical reliance on Elon Musk. The testnet now gives developers a live environment to build on that infrastructure.
