Drones struck a major Yandex data centre in Russia's Ryazan region on Thursday, sparking a fire and forcing the company to suspend the site's operations. Yandex says it is restoring affected services, and the strike marks the first major drone attack on a Russian data hub after weeks of Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centres.
Drones struck a major data centre in Russia's Ryazan region owned by Yandex on Thursday, the company said. The strike caused a fire and forced Yandex to fully suspend the centre's operations. Yandex said it is now dealing with the consequences of the attack and working to restore the services that were affected.
Despite the disruption, Yandex said its core consumer services were not affected by the strike. The company runs YandexGPT, one of Russia's leading generative AI models. On the website of its Yandex Cloud service, the company said there were problems with the electricity supply at one data centre "zone", and it recommended that customers use other zones.
The strike on the Yandex facility follows a wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centres in recent weeks. Until Thursday, however, no confirmed major Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian data centres had taken place, making this the first major attack of its kind on a Russian data hub.
