Isabel Schnabel, a hawkish voice on the ECB's Executive Board, may leave her post before her term ends to take a role at the International Monetary Fund, Handelsblatt reported. Her exit would leave Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel as the sole German candidate to succeed Christine Lagarde, coming as euro-area inflation still sits above the ECB's target.

European Central Bank executive board member Isabel Schnabel may leave her position before her term ends to take a role at the International Monetary Fund, Handelsblatt reported, citing government and finance sources. Her non-renewable term does not expire until December 31, 2027, making an early exit a mid-stream departure from one of the most consequential roles in global central banking.

If she departs early, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel would remain the sole German candidate to succeed Christine Lagarde, Handelsblatt reported.

A hawkish voice on rate policy

Schnabel joined the ECB's Executive Board on January 1, 2020, weeks before COVID-19 upended the global economy, and now oversees the bank's market operations. Euro-area inflation has been hovering around 2.9%, still above the ECB's 2% target, and she has been among the most vocal advocates for keeping rates elevated to close that gap. As late as August 2026, she was still pushing for further rate hikes, arguing that persistent inflation driven by geopolitical tensions and resilient economic data justified continued tightening.

Blockchain remarks at Jackson Hole

Schnabel's most recent high-profile appearance came at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium on August 28, 2026, where she called for central banks to incorporate blockchain technology into their operations, framing it as a necessary adaptation to a financial landscape that is evolving faster than institutional frameworks. If she carries that view to the IMF, an institution that advises 190 member countries on economic policy, the effects could extend well beyond Europe.

A German succession question

Germany holds the seat Schnabel occupies, so Berlin will nominate her replacement. The ECB's Executive Board has six members, each wielding outsized influence compared with the larger Governing Council, and her market-operations role gives her direct oversight of the bank's asset-purchase and reinvestment policies.

For now, the ECB has not confirmed a departure timeline, and the IMF has not announced any appointment.
