European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde has pushed back on the idea that rising energy costs should automatically push the ECB toward higher rates. She says the bank will weigh growth and consumption alongside energy prices, addressing policy meeting by meeting rather than reacting to oil moves alone.

Christine Lagarde says the ECB will not simply follow oil prices higher with rates. Rates, she says, do not move in lockstep with the price of energy, even as oil trades above $100 following the latest Middle East supply disruptions.

Growth and consumption factor into the decision

Lagarde argues that other factors, including growth and consumption, also shape the ECB's path on rates. She calls the current approach a measured response and says the central bank remains data-dependent, addressing the situation meeting by meeting. She also urges markets to avoid chaotic moves and notes that the rise in bond yields is a global trend.

Her comments matter because markets have moved quickly to reprice the ECB's outlook as energy costs feed back into inflation expectations. Yet Lagarde is drawing a distinction between acknowledging that energy is a significant variable and committing to an automatic rate hike path.

The ECB's balancing act

Higher energy costs can push headline inflation higher, but they also squeeze household purchasing power and consumption. Policymakers are watching closely for second-round effects, though the evidence for those effects remains minimal so far.

Lagarde says she has nothing to report on a possible departure from the ECB.
