Christine Lagarde told Irish broadcaster RTE she plans to leave the ECB "in 2027," then answered "we'll see" when asked if that means October 2027 specifically. The vague reply keeps succession speculation alive just as Reuters reports France is backing Klaas Knot to take over as ECB president.

Lagarde gave RTE a firm-sounding answer before undercutting it. She first said she leaves in 2027, but when the interviewer pressed on whether that meant October 2027, she replied only "we'll see." That is hardly confirmation of an early departure, but it probably doesn't do much to kill off the speculation that has been hanging around for much of this year either.

Lagarde said the transition would happen "in the most professional way as it should be" whenever the time comes. The speculation is not new. It began in 2025 amid talk that Lagarde could cut her ECB term short to lead the World Economic Forum, and the chatter grew louder earlier this year as political figures pushed to have a say in who replaces her.

The timing matters because the succession race is already forming. Reuters reported this week that France would back former Dutch central bank governor Klaas Knot to succeed Lagarde as ECB president. That backing is reportedly part of a broader arrangement in which a French candidate would take over as the central bank's chief economist instead.

Lagarde's mandate still has plenty of time left to run, so one carefully worded answer should not be read as a resignation letter. But the succession question is slowly starting to become a little harder for markets to ignore, because whoever eventually takes over could shape the tone of ECB policy discussions beyond 2027. Her latest non-answer suggests that conversation probably isn't going away anytime soon.
